&lt;p&gt;Indeed, the area around the Yellow river was the location of the earliest parts of Chinese civilization, which gradually spead outward in most directions, though during rapid spread south in the first few hundred years AD aggression from groups from the far north increased.  Throughout the next several hundred hears the sinicization of the south proceeded.  As far as modern linguistic diversity is concerned, it is more the geographical nature of the southern regions, with many rivers and valleys encouraging small enclaves, as opposed to the wide open north.  The substrata of the native languages of southern China and southeast Asia also play a role in the languages down there.&lt;/p&gt;
