A thick coating of finish

Well, my first semester as a graduate student has come to a finish. That is all.

Okay, maybe not all. I was relatively productive, I suppose. Took a bunch of classes, learned stuff, and so on. I did come up with a couple of mini-topics that could be turned into term papers (one was turned into two squibs; another got accepted as an alternate for next year’s BLS meeting), and began what will probably be a long research project on variation. So all good and nice.

ooh-what kind of variation? sounds exciting.

Oh, just the sort of stuff that I talked about at the slugs symposium. Though that was the corpus side, I’m also planning on doing “fieldwork” (which may mean doing surveys, but hopefully means going to Japan). At least, “variation” is how I pitched it to nsf.
